St. Louis

Thirty-four apprentice bricklayers completed their 3-1/2-year training programs in 2006, and have received their journeyman cards. A list of new journeymen was made public in a joint announcement by John J. Smith, Jr., chairman of the Masonry Institute of St. Louis; Donald Brown, business manager of Bricklayers' Union Local No. 1 of Missouri and co-chairman of the school's joint trust; and Richard K. Swanson, president of Swanson Masonry and co-chairman of the school's joint trust.

The local apprentice program has been in operation for approximately 140 years, producing the skilled union bricklayers who have created the St. Louis area's renowned heritage of masonry structures. Through the support of Bricklayers' Union Local No. 1 of Missouri, the Mason Contractors Association-St. Louis and area masonry suppliers, the Bricklayers' Apprenticeship School has become a model for bricklayer apprentice programs across the country.

The Masonry Institute of St. Louis is a promotional organization that serves as an educational and informational resource on masonry design and construction on behalf of the Mason Contractors Association-St. Louis and Bricklayers' Union Local No. 1 of Missouri. # SmithGroup Architects Selected as AIA Fellows

SmithGroup-winners of a 2005 and 2006 Arizona Masonry Guild Excellence in Masonry Architectural Award, and a 2006 Masonry Institute of Michigan Masonry Honor Award, among others-is pleased to announce that architects Harold E. Davis Jr., William L. Diefenbach and Paul G. Johnson have been elevated to the prestigious College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

The announcement was made by AIA on Feb. 23 in Washington, DC. The honor is awarded to members who have made significant contributions to architecture and society, and who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession.

Davis, Diefenbach and Johnson of SmithGroup will be among 76 members of the American Institute of Architects who will receive their Fellowship medal during the Investiture of Fellows Ceremony at the AIA 2007 National Convention and Design Expo in San Antonio on May 4, 2007.
