BSI Tucker Design Award winners

Words: Jane BennettBuilding Stone Institute honored Twelve design projects during its biennial Tucker Design Awards program held May 11, 2012 in the Shoenberg Auditorium of the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. A celebratory luncheon followed in the Garden's Spink Pavilion. First presented in 1977, the Tucker Design Award is recognized as the most prestigious architectural design award in both the building and landscape design communities. The Tucker Design Award honors those whose work exhibits excellence in concept, design, construction and use of natural stone.

BSI members hosted an architectural tour of St. Louis the day prior to the awards ceremony highlighting the Gateway Arch Grounds revitalization project; Citygarden and natural stone architecture on Washington University's Danforth campus.

Jurors for this year's Tucker Design Awards were Ripley Rasmus, Senior Vice President and Director of Design at HOK St. Louis; Rae Price, FASLA, Peridian International, Newport Beach, CA; and Peter MacKeith, Associate Dean, Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University St. Louis.

In conjunction with the Tucker Design Awards event, BSI proudly recognized Robert Frasca, FAIA, of Zimmer Gunsel Frasca Architects as their 2012 Bybee Prize winner. Given in honor of the late James Daniel Bybee, a respected and long-standing member of the Building Stone Institute, the Bybee Prize is awarded to an individual architect or landscape architect for a body of work executed over time and distinguished by outstanding design and use of natural stone.
