Utah's Outstanding Masonry
Buildings Honored
Seven buildings received achievement awards for architectural design and five others were recognized for engineering skill in the masonry design competition sponsored recently by Utah Masonry Research & Promotion. Presentations of the awards were made at a banquet in the Hotel Utah in Salt Lake City in mid-May. Designers, owners and builders of the structures received their honors from Ronald J. Reaveley, president, Structural Engineers Association of Utah, and Lynn A. Jones, president, Utah Society of Architects.
The top award for excellence in masonry design went to Weiss & Associates, for the First Federal Savings & Loan Building in Salt Lake City. An honor award was given to Joe H. Ashworth Associates for the Amcor Office & Warehouse Facility in Lindon.
Merit awards were presented to Montmorency, Hayes & Talbot Architects, Inc., for the University of Utah Alumni Center, Salt Lake City: Architectural Design West, Inc., for Logan Regional Hospital, Logan, and Silver. Allsop & Naylor, Inc., for Larsen Elementary School, Spanish Fork.
Special recognition awards were given to Lloyd & Butler Associates, for Farmington LDS Rock Chapel, Farmington, and McEntire Association, for the Marquee and Marquee & Entrance Gate, Weber State College. Jury's comment: "Free-standing brick masses and linear forms of the metal fascia provide a commendable answer of identifying the entrance to the activity center without the usual clutter of graphic materials. An excellent example of abstract sculpture."
Farmington LDS Rock Chapel-Special Architectural Recognition Award. Jury's comment: "It is the hope of this jury that this highly successful restoration and addition to this stone chapel will stimulate the reuse of other similar structures in Utah. Well done."
