This Brick Check Won't Bounce!

Tom Young (far right), executive director of the Masonry & Ceramic Tile Institute of Oregon, recently presented a check for $2,160 to the Friends of Pioneer Square to help defray the cost of constructing a public gathering place in downtown Portland.

When completed, the square will contain some 300,000 paver brick. The check, for 144 bricks at $15 each, was inscribed on a paver like those being used in the construction of Pioneer Square. The presentation cermony took place in Pioneer Square on a 16' x 16' sample panel built by Bricklayers Union Local #1 of Oregon apprentices and instructors who donated their labor. The area includes two brick paver colors and three patterns, and was built with brick contributed by Mutual Materials Co. Pictured with Young are (from left): Chuck Phelps of Local #1: William Billings, Masonry & Ceramic Tile Institute: Philip Bogue, president, Friends of Pioneer Square: Bill Belanger, Local #1. and Dexter Walter, Mutual Materials Co.

No Hair-splitting Here

A barber had a patron with rapidly thinning hair who was absolutely adamant about how it should be cut. One day, after an especially annoying session, the man ordered. "Part it in the middle." "I can't," said the barber. "Why not?" the irate customer demanded. "Because," said the barber, "you have an odd number of hairs."
