Senate Okays Auchter As OSHA Chief

Thorne G. Auchter, a Florida construction executive, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to be Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety & Health.

Auchter, 38, has worked for the past 20 years in numerous phases of the construction industry, from onsite laborer to company executive. He has been executive vice president of the Auchter Co., Jacksonville, Fla., since 1975. His duties included company safety and health responsibilities and corporate labor relations with seven main crafts and 10 subcontractor crafts.

Gilson Brothers Co., Plymouth, Wis., has appointed Jeffrey Servis marketing manager for its Concrete Mixer Division. C. James Gulde, president of Gulde Brick & Block, Inc., Amarillo, Texas, has been named board chairman-elect of the National Concrete Masonry Association. Gerald S. Washington is the new San Diego area manager for Morrison-Knudsen Co., Inc. and Emkay Development Co., Inc. Emkay is a division of Morrison-Knudsen, a contracting, engineering and development firm. Metropolitan Ceramics, Inc., Canton, Ohio, has appointed William Bruce as district sales manager.

Charles F. Velardo Honored by IMI

Charles F. Velardo, former chairman of the International Masonry Institute, receives a Certificate of Meritorious Service to IMI. Making the presentation were: Eugene George, chairman of IMI; Robert F. Ebeling, chairman of the International Masonry Apprenticeship Trust (IMAT); Velardo; Ray Lackey, executive director, IMI, and John T. Joyce, president of the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen.

Frantz Heads MC & MCA

Mike Frantz has been elected president of the Minnesota Concrete & Masonry Contractors Association, succeeding Karen Drescher, who held the post for two years.

Serving with Frantz are Tim Quinlan, president-elect; Howard Schryer, secretary, and Conni Drescher, treasurer.

Builders Exchange Elects Forte President

G. P. "Joe" Forte, president of the mason contracting firm of G. Forte Co., St. Claire Shores, Mich., has been elected president of the Builders Exchange of Detroit and Michigan, one of the largest and oldest regional construction associations in the nation.

Forte, whose firm is a member of MCAA, is a past president and current officer of the Masonry Institute of Michigan; past director and member of the Detroit Mason Contractors Association, and president of the Mason Contractors Association, Inc.

Clements Celebrate 25th Wedding Anniversary

Paul and Shirley Clements of Paul Clements Masonry, Inc., Louisville, Ky., celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary April 14. Paul, a former regional vice president of MCAA and presently a member of the Constitution & Bylaws and Insurance Committees, heads one of the prominent mason contracting firms in Kentucky.

Paul and Shirley, who are planning a trip to Hawaii to celebrate their milestone, were feted to a surprise party by their children. In attendance with their wives in Louisville were W. C. Dentinger, Jr., MCAA secretary; Jerry Dufour, regional vice president, and Design/Build Committee chairman Ray Prossen. All are from the Milwaukee area in Wisconsin.

Next CONEXPO in '87

The next CONEXPO International Construction Equipment Exposition has been scheduled for 1987, according to its sponsor, the Construction Industry Manufacturers Association.

The CONEXPO exposition, which is held once every six years, is the largest private exhibition of construction machinery in the world. Selection of a host city for the 1987 show will be made at a later date.
