"Privy, The Classic Outhouse Book"
by Janet A. Strombeck and Richard
H. Strombeck. 54 pages: 25 illustra-
tions and floor plans. $7.95 inc. 1st

Every so often a mundane subject
is treated in such a refreshing way
that it deserves a literary salute. Such
is the case with Privy, a lighthearted
study of outhouses with a collection
of stories, history, experiences and
nostalgia about them.
Authors Janet and Richard Strom-
beck, with the aid of illustrator Mar-
lene Ekman and designer Jim Klopp.
have put together a delightful slice of
Americana into a well written and ex-
pertly illustrated volume. The book
contains some 25 outhouse illustra-
tions together with floor plans and in-
terior decorating ideas-yes, there's
even one for the proverbial brick ver-
sion! Besides serving as functional re-
lief stations (where local codes per-
mit), the buildings can be adapted as
garden and tool sheds, saunas, guest
houses, bus shelters, playhouses and
the like. Working drawings cost from
$12.95 to $18.95 and can be pur-
chased additionally.
The whole concept of Privy can
perhaps best be summed up in the
dedication to the book: "This book is
dedicated to all those who made his-

"Earthquake Resistant Building De-
sign and Construction, 2nd Edition."
by Norman E. Green. 216 pages: 35
illustrations; 6 x 9; publication date:
March, 1981; $18.95. Van Nostrand
Reinhold, 135 W. 50th St., New York.
NY 10020.
This book shows how to design and
construct earthquake-resistant build-
ings of all types, including wood frame.
steel frame, concrete frame and ma-
sonry bearing wall. It also gives meth-
ods of design for strengthening exist-
ing buildings, particularly by the use
of gunite and for the repair of earth-
quake damage using epoxy. It pro-
vides pertinent information concern-
ing earthquakes, including faults and
their activities.
The revised 2nd edition contains
material that was not available when
the 1st edition was written. This in-
cludes a report of recent cyclic load-
ing tests of epoxy repaired concrete
beams. These cyclic loading tests are
important since they simulate the ac
tual loading produced by an earth-
quake.
