Glass Block Design Conserves Energy
The Koll Co., general contractor based in Newport Beach, completed a $2.4 MILLION data processing and accounting center for Allergan Pharmaceuticals in Irvine, Calif. The 23,000 sq. ft. facility is the most recent addition to Allergan's 34-acre complex. The new center was designed by William Blurock & Partners, Newport Beach. The building, which incorporates many energy-saving features, has an all-brick exterior.
The $1.2 million, 15,000 sq. ft. Transit Operations and Maintenance Facility in Chapel Hill, N.C., incorporates natural daylight and passive solar heating. To meet its low energy requirement goals, the building is oriented for southern exposure to let winter sunlight in through glass block walls, glazed vehicle doors and roof monitors. The building's designer, Cogswell/Hausler Associates of Chapel Hill, won the Industrial-Built category in Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp.'s 10th annual Energy Conservation Awards Program.
