Loadbearing Masonry
Seminar at lowa State U. A day-long seminar on Loadbearing Masonry Construction was presented November 21 by the Masonry Institute of lowa and Iowa State University's Department of Civil Engineering.
The panel of speakers included Max Porter, professor of civil engineering, Iowa State University; Robert Beiner, director of engineering, International Masonry Institute; Alan Yorkdale, vice president/engineering and research, Brick Institute of America; and Kevin Callahan, director of technical services, National Concrete Masonry Association.
Presiding at the sessions were Bruce Paterson, executive director, Masonry Institute of lowa, and Gary Davis, Endicott Clay Products.
Morgen Mfg. Acquires Concrete Pump Line
Morgen Manufacturing Co., Yankton, S.D., has acquired all of the assets of Pumpit Concrete Pumps. Inc., according to Jim Cope, president of Morgen. Cope said that manufacturing of the entire Pumpit product line will begin immediately at its South Dakota operations. Pumpit had been located in Alburtis, Pa. The pumps will be marketed in the U.S. and Canada, and exported worldwide through J. D. Marshall International, Inc., Skokie, III.
The acquisition makes Morgen the largest full-line manufacturer of concrete placement systems, Cope said. With Pumpit's 12 models, Morgen now has 20 different lines of truck-mounted and trailer-mounted pumps in addition to on-deck placing equipment.

New Concrete Block Introduced by Kirchner
A new "Designer Series" of concrete block called "Shadow Stone" has been introduced by Kirchner, Inc., 12901 St. Charles Rock Rd., Bridgeton, MO 63044.
The attractive units provide six different shapes every two blocks. Randomnly selected and laid in running bond, no two buildings will have exactly the same pattern. Kirchner says the Shadow Stone series has been used successfully in residential, industrial and office developments as well as in religious and commercial buildings. Fred Broad Heads CIMA
Fred J. Broad, formerly of FMC Corp., has replaced John Benson, who retired effective August 31, as executive vice president and secretary of the Construction Industry Manufacturers Association, Milwaukee, Wis.
Prior to joining the CIMA staff, Broad was functioning as general chairman for CONEXPO '87. He in turn has been replaced in this post by Robert J. Ross, president of Ross Co., Brownwood, Texas. Ross is a member CIMA's board of directors.
Residential Developer Reports Record Earnings
The J.L. Mason Group, Inc., Chesterfield, Mo., has reported record unconsolidated gross revenues of $51.5 million for its 1982 fiscal year, which ended January 31, 1983. Revenues generated in the period reflect a 33% increase over fiscal 1981 gross revenues of $38.7 million.
