The A. Epstein Companies, Chicago, III., have been honored with two architectural awards for their design of the CMD Meridian Business Campus in Aurora, III. The Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) has granted Building A4 the Second Honor Award of Merit in its national design competition, and the Illinois Indiana Masonry Council has given Buildings A3 and A4 the Bronze Medal in its 1986 Annual Design Awards Program. The CMD Meridian Business Campus is a development of CMD Midwest, Inc.
Typically, industrial buildings are designed to be purely functional: they provide maximum warehousing and manufacturing space and minimal office area. Buildings A3 and A4 of the Meridian Business Campus expand on this practice. Aesthetics, as well as function, were a prime consideration in their development. These industrial buildings provide adequate warehousing, manufacturing and office space, yet are attractive and dynamic in appearance and design.
In order to achieve a high-quality and visually pleasing appearance, masonry was selected as the primary building material. Various types of brick masonry were used in combination on both buildings.
On Building A3, two colors of brick create a subtle checkerboard effect. The checkerboard design, which de-emphasizes the expansive scale of this building, is further articulated by the gold reflective squares that have been strategically placed within the brick curtain wall. To further enhance its appearance, aluminum mullions were removed from the facade of the building to create an impressive colonnade at the entrance. In addition, the colonnade has a functional role: it provides a solar screen.
On Building A4, contrasting colors of brick masonry were used in combination with limestone trim. Horizontal striping of these materials improves the appearance of the building. Varying colors and materials also give a more humanistic scale. Finally, the building is designed with a circular entry court and an interior rotunda-features which not only provide an impressive entrance, but also further reduce the scale of the structure.
The use of brick on Buildings A3 and A4 creates a new image for industrial buildings and sets the standard for future structures in the 150-acre Meridian Business Campus to follow: buildings that are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing.
Wil-Mar Mason Contractors, Bloomingdale, III., performed the masonry work.
