Evaluating Program Effectiveness

To measure the effect of their program, a system for evaluation should be part of your overall plan. A before and after measurement is ideal. For example, study your telephone logs for the past twelve months to determine the types of inquiries you're fielding. Categorize them according to type of caller, reason for call, and disposition of call to create baseline measurements.

After your plan is executed, track the same information for the next twelve months.

If you have no prior data, monitor calls for six months prior to implementation of your plan to establish baseline measurements. You may wish to set up a dedicated phone or fax line to handle calls during this period.

How Do You Impress Them?

MANAGERS ARE NO longer watchdogs, police officers or slave drivers. Today, they must be coaches, facilitators and cheerleaders. To cope with this change, managers should:

Realize that younger workers want jobs they feel have meaning and a larger purpose than just getting a paycheck.

Consider the recent National Study of the Changing Workforce. The top three things people listed as most important in deciding to take a job were open communication, effect on personal and family life and the nature of the work.

Take very seriously the task of sharing information with all employees. Tell them what you know when you know it.

Involve employees in decisions that affect them. Better yet, whenever possible let them make the decisions.

Allow for greater flexibility and autonomy in individual jobs to account for non-work needs. A little flexibility in working hours can go a long way in making employees' lives less stressful.

Let employees know why what they do is important. Help them to develop skills that can make them more valuable.

Show employees, in as many ways as possible, that you appreciate their efforts.
