Watertown, South Dakota - What happens when you combine a uniquely challenging museum design for a nationally renowned artist, with the skills of the world's largest granite producer? You create an award winning Terry Redlin Art Museum in Watertown, South Dakota. Terry Redlin cut the ribbon June 7th at noon to officially open the $10 million Art Center. The museum will house nearly 100 of Redlin's original oil paintings, and will be home to South Dakota's first planetarium. The granite used in the 52,000 square foot Egyptian revival style building was quarried on three continents, and includes 24 large Rockville white Granite columns, which support an immense overhanging roof. The column granite was quarried in Rockville, Minnesota then transported to Cold Spring for fabrication. Terry Redlin and his son, Charles, who designed the building, and representatives of Gray Construction Co., who built the building, all visited the quarry site to approve the color and to assure confidence in the output of the Rockville Quarry prior to production for this job. Each column was made up of three 10'-8" column sections, in addition to their base and capitols. When erected each column stands 38 feet tall and weighs 20 tons. Ted Krebsbach, sales manager for Cold Spring, stated the project was especially challenging due to the scope and uniqueness of the work. "Solid granite columns in the size and quantity required for Redlin Art Center are not frequently used in modern architecture and the tapering quality of each granite column added to the production challenge," stated Krebsbach. The three 10-foot 8-inch column sections when set range from a 36-inch diameter at the bottom to 28 inches at the top of the third section. Rockville White granite is also used for over 9,000 square feet of tile on the main floor. Elsewhere, over 10 thousand square feet of Black Galaxy Granite from India is used in the main vestibule, in the art viewing areas and in the exhibit area of the planetarium. On the walls in the art viewing areas, there are approximately 5900 square feet of Impala Granite from Africa also featured.
