Charlotte...
A Revolutionary City With A 20th Century Spirit
Charlotte and the Piedmont area are growing at a rapid pace. In fact, it's growing at such a frantic pace that you can almost find something new every day. The residents of the area are so upbeat and turned on about their growth, that they exude tremendous civic pride.
Charlotte has reason to boast. One of the hottest tickets in town is surely the NBA basketball Charlotte Hornets. Charlotte's latest professional sport franchises is the Carolina Panthers of the NFL. The Panthers began play two seasons ago and immediately established itself as a team to be reckoned with by earning a spot in the 1996 playoffs.
Rich in history, Charlotte was founded in the mid-1700's. The pioneers who founded Charlotte and Mecklenburg County were settlers from Scotland, Ireland, England, Germany and Switzerland. Primarily farmers and merchants, they were bold and often defiant. Despite being named after Queen Charlotte, devoted wife of Britain's King George III, the settlers were quick to galvanize support for the colonial resistance during the Revolutionary War and one of the first to declare independence from England.
Attempting to extinguish the revolutionary forces in Mecklenburg County, General Lord Charles Cornwallis and his red coats occupied Charlotte for a brief period in 1780 despite rigorous resistance by local patriots. Irked by the Mecklenburger's constant skirmishes, Cornwallis finally declared their domain "a dammed hornet's nest" and retreated. Two centuries later, it inspired the name for the city's NBA team, the Hornets.
