Charlotte
States. The two story log house in which Polk was born in 1795 has been re-created along with farm buildings that forms the James K. Polk Memorial located 10 miles south of Charlotte.
Today, nearly 6 million people live within a 100 mile radius of Charlotte and growing. As the city has flourished, many attractive residential suburbs have developed. The prosperity has also led to the dynamic revitalization of historic Dilworth and Uptown's Fourth Ward, a charming neighborhood that contains houses of Victorian and various 20th century styles. Walking tours thru historic Fourth Ward takes in 74 structures.
Architect Richard Morris oversaw construction of the 250 room mansion, which took 1,000 workers five years to complete. Large brick kilns and woodworking shops were set up. Indiana limestone was transported on a private railroad spun and dressed on the property. Many artisans were brought in from Europe to construct Biltmore.
Charlotte Speedway (above)
Located 16 miles Northeast of Charlotte on U.S. 29, the Charlotte Speedway is home of important NASCAR races, such as the Coca Cola 600, offers tours which include a movie on the speedway's history, a ride around the track, special exhibits and one of the country's largest NASCAR gift shops.
Team Charlotte
Most notably, Charlotte is known for NASCAR racing. But Charlotte has become well established as drawing one of the highest attendance figures in the National Basketball Association with the NBA Charlotte Hornets ranking among the leagues top draws as well as the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte National Football League franchise which in just a few years has become one of the most respected teams.
