Attending the MCAA Mid-Year Meetings is always an exciting experience, featuring a mix of unpredictable weather and varied attendance. The challenge lies in getting there, but once you do, the breathtaking views make it all worthwhile.

"I don't know if I'd be here in February, but I'm loving it right now. One of the nicest views I've ever seen!"

Baptized Into Masonry
Dick's introduction to the masonry industry was a familial baptism. Raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, his family operated a masonry company. His father, after serving in the Navy, worked for his uncle and eventually took over. For Dick's father, college wasn't an option as the eldest son, who had to start supporting the family immediately.

Learning From the Ground Up
Dick was put to work on job sites early, where he engaged with veterans from World War II and Vietnam, gaining invaluable life lessons. His parents insisted he balance work with education, instilling strong values in him.

A Step Away and a Return
Despite leaving the industry for radio and advertising, Dick felt drawn back to his roots, lobbying to return to the family business and beginning anew from the bottom rung.

Climbing the Ladder to MCAA Chairman
Rising to the position of MCAA Chairman wasn't an overnight journey. Dick credits much of his success to the lessons learned from attending conventions and interacting with industry peers and experts.

"My parents always sent us to conventions to learn from somebody with a different last name."

The importance of continuous learning through exposure to new perspectives was a key element of his growth within the industry.

Embracing Change and Building Strong Networks
In today's rapidly evolving world, embracing change and technology is crucial. The MCAA, now a truly national association, offers great opportunities to connect with peers across the nation, sharing expertise regardless of company size.

Dick’s philosophy involves maintaining a pleasant work atmosphere and learning to enjoy the work. His father, a former MCAA Chairman himself, taught him the importance of being adaptive amidst economic challenges and industry debates.

"If you don't embrace change and technology, you'll get run over."

Keeping up with technological advances keeps Dick feeling young and engaged. He finds excitement in new tools and methods, likening them to opportunities for renewed youth, especially with family members involved in related industries.

When asked about essential traits for success in masonry, Dick emphasizes perseverance, networking, and learning from others.

"Anyone can catapult past others if they're committed to learning more."

This extends beyond mason contractors to sales managers and others who wish to succeed in the industry.

A Life Beyond Masonry
Outside of work, Dick's life is filled with time spent with his wife and the competitive world of dog agility trials. His wife's dedication is inspiring, and they both look forward to exploring new hobbies together once his tenure as chairman concludes.

"She's taken on Taek Kwon Do and became a black belt... it's something we both enjoy."

Stories of Legacy and Building
Reflecting on the legacy of masonry, Dick shares childhood memories of family trips, where his father would proudly point out buildings he had worked on. This lasting impact resonates as one of the most rewarding aspects of the trade.
