MEMPHIS, TENN. Graduating apprentices were among guests of the February meeting of the Mason Contractors Association of Memphis, Inc. Presiding at the meeting was Donald Cook, chapter president. Other officers of the association are: W. A. Fortner, vice president, and Charles Watkins, secretary-treasurer.

31 Apprentices Compete in Detroit
In Prelim for U.S. Meet April 7-12
DETROIT, MICH. Phillip L. Parisian of Lansing (second from left) and Charles Stark of Muskegon (third from left) were first-place winners in the state-wide apprentice contest staged by the Michigan State Conference of Bricklayers, Masons and Plasters International Union of America March 4 at Cobo Hall, Detroit. Parisian won the $100 top prize for one-year apprentices and Stark received the $100 top award as second-year apprentice winner. Both will participate in the national contest April 7-12 in Cobo Hall as part of the AFL-CIO Trades and Label Show, They are shown with (left to right) Fergus Johnson, president of the Michigan State Conference and Local No. 2; Parisian, Stark; John Lodge of Saginaw, fifth vice president of the BM & PIU; and Donald Bidwell president of the MCA and member of Local 14 of Ann Arbor.
DETROIT, MICH. The state-wide apprentice contest conducted by the Michigan State Conference of Bricklayers was held Friday and Saturday, March 3-4, at Cobo Hall, Detroit, in conjunction with the Detroit Home Builders Home & Flower Show.
Winners of the two divisions were Phillip L. Parisian of Lansing, and Charles Stark of Muskegon, who were judged top apprentices for one-year trainees and second-year trainees, respectively. By winning over 29 other contestants, Parisian and Stark also won an opportunity to compete in the national contest to be held April 7-12 in Cobo Hall in connection with the AFL-CIO Trades and Label Show. Judges for the two-day contests, which attracted a field of 31 contestants who had won the privilege by winning local apprentice meets in their respective localities, were Edgar Baker of Columbus, Ohio, seventh vice president of the BM & PIU; Don Bidwell, president of the Detroit, Mich. chapter, MCA; and Julius Giekiere of Detroit, retired member of Local No. 2.
The Detroit contest was sponsored by the Michigan State Conference, BM & PIU, in cooperation with MCA of Detroit; Michigan and Detroit chapters of AGC; Structural Clay Products Institute; State Dept. of Public Instruction, Bureau of Apprenticeship of U.S. Dept. of Labor; and the Detroit Board of Education.
