Louis Chapter heard from Jim Garn, Vice President Gibsonburg Lime Co., concerning that firm's new lime product. The Expanded Shale Clay & Slate Institute has issued a new Concrete Masonry Guide Specification. It is No. 10 (9-61).

Eero Saarinen, world famed architect, died in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mr. Saarinen is the man responsible for the fabulous design of the Trans World Airlines Terminal at New York International Airport. Other notable projects of Mr. Saarinen include the General Motors Technical Center and the auditorium-chapel for M.I.T. L. B. Smith, Inc., Baltimore, has been appointed a distributor for the state of Maryland and parts of Delaware, Virginia, and West Virginia, by the Kwik-Mix Co., Port Washington, Wis. Terra cotta, the Italian name for "fired earth", was in use as long ago as 3,000 B.C.

Lee C. Mielke has been named Illinois State Architect by Governor Otto Kerner. He succeeds John Javis. Dr. James L. Wyatt has been appointed Vice President for Program Development at the Armour Research Foundation, Chicago, III. Oystein Egeland-Eriksen, a native of Norway, has been named an assistant professor of architecture in the College of Applied Arts at the University of Cincinnati. One of the nation's leading producers of industrial forced air space heaters, Dravo Corp., Pittsburgh, has entered the infra-red radiant heating field. The Chicago Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers has announced the formation of the nation's first Professional Engineering Aid and Referral Bureau. Its purpose is to aid the public in obtaining competent professional engineering services.

98 PERCENT VOLUNTARY COMPLIANCE WITH LAW

WASHINGTON, D. C. Experience of the past year under the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act, "clearly indicates that the objectives of the 1959 labor law are being met," Secretary of Labor Arthur J. Goldberg reported recently.

The Secretary's remark was made in letters to Senator Lister Hill, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labor and Public Welfare, and Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor, transmitting a fiscal year progress report on the administration of the controversial legislation.

"I am happy to report," he wrote, "that a fair and cooperative attitude has been prevalent among the majority of those affected by the Evidence of this is the high degree of compliance with this relatively new piece of legislation. Of over 1900 violations found in the past year, more than 98 percent were corrected voluntarily. Recourse to legal action was necessary in only 33 instances in which violations could not otherwise be resolved."
