Rockrise Named Advisor To HUD
George T. Rockrise FAIA, of San Francisco, Calif. nationally recognized architect and planner, has been appointed Adviser on Design to the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Secretary Robert C. Weaver announced the appointment at a press conference held June 20 at The Octagon, headquarters of The American Institute of Architects.
Secretary Weaver, who also announced that Mrs. Estelle Dodge, president of Estelle Dodge Associates, New York City, will study the use of works of art in urban redevelopment, said the appointments were made to help bring about higher standards of beauty and design in urban areas.
Brooks & Brooks Win Competition
The architectural firm of Brooks and Brooks, of Houston, Texas, has been named winner of a $15,000 grane prize in a National Fallout Shelter Design Competition conducted by The American Institute of Architects in collaboration with the U.S. Office of Civil Defense.
Goal of the competition was to design community educational and recreation facilities incorporating a fallous shelter as dual-purpose space.
The center designed by the winning team included a library, gymnasium and civic auditorium as its principal units and a variety of classrooms, studios, laboratories, shops, meeting rooms, lounges, game rooms and exhibit areas. Outdoor recreation areas and parking were plannee in relation to the center and an adjoining urban park.
Protection from radiation due to fallout during emergency periods was provided as an added advantage, without resort to heavy or underground construction or the creation of expensive single-use shelter space. Rather, all rooms and spaces within the buildings serve normal peacetime uses and are easily adaptable to use as emergency shelter.
Principal buildings of the proposed civic complex were grouped around a central place. Long roof projections with deep fascias provided shielding from both sun and radiation. This feature plus intelligent site grading and the use of low walls, pools, planters and other landscape elements made possible the creation of shelter spaces that are essentially open.
Nearly 275,000 pedestrians were injured and 9,000 were killed during 1965 in the United States, according to The Travelers Insurance Companies. This includes 300 persons who were injured while actually standing on a traffic safety isle!
