In Memoriam

JOSEPH F. KACENA

Joseph F. Kacena, founder and past president of the Anchor Manufacturing Company, passed away at his Duck Lake, Michigan residence August 30th, 1967.

Born July 24th, 1896, in Chicago, Mr. Kacena pioneered the development of two wheel portable cement mixer in the early 1920's. In 1925, he founded the Anchor Manufacturing Company to develop and manufacture mortar and plaster mixers. He successfully guided the company through the rough depression of the early 1930's and conceived the original idea of marketing mixers on a direct factory sales basis.

During World War II he assisted the Navy in the manufacture of landing craft components, and his later years were spent as Honorary Chairman of the Board, advancing the position of the company that he founded.

WILLIAM SODERSTRUM

William K. Soderstrum, was killed on August 29th, in a mishap at the Structural Clay Products Research Foundation, Geneva, III. Mr. Soderstrum had earned a bachelor of science degree in ceramic engineering from the University of Illinois in 1952 and had been employed by the foundation since its establishment in Geneva in 1954.

John Dunlop Resigns

John Dunlop has announced his resignation from the Construction Industry Joint Conference and the Joint Appeals Board of the National Joint Board of Settlement of Jurisdictional Disputes, where he has served as Impartial Chairman of both organizations. Dr. Dunlop, however, has agreed to continue on the Appeals Board for an indefinite period.


M. T. Minotti Named V. P.
Announcement has been made of the appointment of Michael T. Minotti, Sr., Bridgeport, Connecticut, to the position of Tenth Vice President of the B.M. & P.I.U. of A., filling the vacancy caused by the death of John F. Tracy. The appointment was made by International Union President Thomas F. Murphy, with the approval of the Executive Board.

Long prominent in Connecticut, where he has served as President of the State Conference and President of the State and local Building Trades councils, Mr. Minotti started his apprenticeship with his father in 1919 and was initiated a journeyman in Local 2, Bridgeport, in July 1923.


P.C.M. Names Siderits
Robert Siderits has been appointed sales manager by PCM Division of Koehring Company, Port Washington, Wis., for its line of mixer-mate-rial handling equipment. This includes brick buggies, Sky-traks, Moto-Bugs, Cyclo-Mixers, plaster-mortar mixers and concrete mixers. Siderits, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, had been a product manager for a manufacturer of construction equipment. Prior to that he was a district representative and then a regional sales manager for a manufacturer of marine engines.


TCMA Holds Seminars
A series of six Regional Seminars was recently conducted throughout the State of Texas by the Texas Concrete Masonry Association in order to introduce the new TCMA Design Manual for Load-Bearing Concrete Masonry in Multi-Storied Structures.

Approximately 500 architects, engineers, contractors, building inspectors, etc. attended these series of seminars where Albyn Mackintosh, consulting engineer and author of the Design Manual, thoroughly discussed the various aspects of this important subject. The Detroit Mason Contractors Association has announced that it has moved to new and larger quarters at 32401 West Eight Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan 48152. The telephone number is 477-8877.


SCPI In New Quarters
Structural Clay Products Institute has moved into its new quarters at Westgate Research Park on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. The new mailing address is 1750 Old Meadow Road, McLean, Virginia, 22101. Telephone is a/c 703 893-4010.

The new three-story building is located just off the Washington Beltway (Exit 11) and is halfway between downtown Washington and the Dulles International Airport.

The Research plant has moved from Geneva, Ill. and is now located in the new facilities in Virginia. The vacant headquarters in Washington will become the new chancery of Saudi Arabia.
