Phoenix Holds Estimating Course
Estimating Course in session. Each person is provided necessary text materials along with reference information to follow through with a typical estimate.
PHOENIX, ARIZ. Traveling to the sunny southwestern section of the United States, MCAA's Masonry Estimating Course was held on Friday and Saturday, March 31 and April 1, at the Smokehouse Restaurant.
Twenty-three contractors were in attendance bringing the total number of persons who have attended the course to 654. Edward LeJeune was the featured lecturer with Paul Rosensteel, MCAA Field Representative, handling the production. Winner of the Estimating Handbook was Virgil Griner.
Under the direction of MCAA's Education Committee the Masonry Estimating Course has been conducted from border to border and coast to coast. Chairman Robert Harrison has announced that arrangements have just been completed to hold the Course in Seattle, Washington, June 9 & 10. Those interested in attending should contact the MCAA Executive Office.
Relaxing after a full day in the classroom contractors were guest of the Arizona Masonry Contractors Association for cocktails.
New Washington Law
Washington's Gov. Dan Evans has signed into law Senate Bill 245 providing that the 1963 Contractor's Registration Act shall not be applicable in any court action on any agreement in the period August 1, 1963, to December 24, 1965.
The bill was the subject of prolonged debate in the House. It said portions of the 1963 Act regarding bonding should not apply to court actions on agreements entered into between the above dates.
This was the period during which a Spokane court ruling that the bonding requirements were unconstitutional was being appealed to the State Supreme Court, which reversed the lower court.
An amendment by Rep. Alfred Leland of Remond, in effect, House Bill 348 which never got out of committee, also lowered the bonding requirement, although a lesser amount, and provides that no building permit shall be issued to a contractor who is not licensed. It passed 52-41.
The 1963 act required general contractors to post $2,000 bonds, and specialty contractors, $1,000 bonds, and requires all to register with the state and provide insurance.
Omark Reorganization
Omark Industries, Inc. has drafted plans to reorganize the company along lines that emphasize worldwide divisions instead of the present structure of geographic profit centers, according to John D. Gray, president.
The new organization is expected to be fully implemented by Jan. 1, 1968, or earlier, he said.
