Filler Block with Cast-in-Place Solid Slabs

Design and construction details for this system are similar to cast-in-place solid slabs except that formwork is minimized and materials can be placed without the use of cranes; filler block, which also provide forms for the joists, are placed either on solid decking or span the openings between 2 x 8 joist soffit forms supported on a wood framework. Steel reinforcement is placed and the joist and slab are poured simultaneously. For design purposes the effective width of the joist can include the end webs of the filler block if the strength of the concrete in the block is at least equal to that used for the joist.

Filler Block with Manufactured Joist

Another version of the joist-filler block system which has received extensive use for many years incorporates a manufactured joist, girder, or beam to span between bearing elements. The beam consists of a factory formed steel truss web system having a bottom chord of prestressed or precast concrete, or steel plate of the required section. Special filler block are placed between the beams and the joist and topping concrete is poured to form a monolithic floor system. Advantages of this system are similar to the concrete-joist-filler block system except that in addition, forms are eliminated and shoring is minimized. Ductwork and utility outlets can be easily located between the beams and conduit placed in position where it can be covered with the concrete topping.
