'72 CMCA Convention

Record numbers of delegates and registrants, including engineers and architects, attended the technical sessions at the 1972 annual convention of the Canadian Masonry Contractors Association held recently in Vancouver. B.C. at the Bayshore Inn.

Kicking off the sessions was Albyn Mackintosh, consulting engineer, Mackintosh & Mackintosh, Los Angeles, on "Engineering Aspects in the Design of Load Bearing Masonry," followed by L. E. Salveson, Mutual Material Co., Seattle, on "Engineering and Job Site Aspects of Load Bearing Masonry."

"How to Stay Young Even though Married and Employed was the topic of the entertaining luncheon speaker, Terry Lawson, management consultant, Management Research (Western) Ltd., Vancouver, B.C., for all male registrants.

Afternoon speakers included Fred Bassetti, architect, Fred Bassetti & Co., Seattle, on "Architectural Aspects of Load Bearing Masonry," followed by Ron Lazar, associate professor, civil engineer, University of Manitoba, on "Mortar Research."

The technical sessions were climaxed by a question and answer period by A. Mackintosh, L. E. Salveson, F. Bassetti and R. Lazar. Craig Harrold, B. W. Brooker Engineering (B.C.) Ltd., Vancouver, B.C., "Materials Testing." Wm. Elkington, Materials Testing Ltd., Vancouver, B.C., and "Mortars & Grouts," Harry Morstead, Morstead & Son Ltd., Calgary, Alta., rounded out the panel.

The following day's technical sessions included "Aspects of Packaging and Handling of Materials" by W. P. Kelly, manager, Brick & Block Packaging, Signode Corp., Chicago, and "Aspects of Labour Relations in B.C." by C. J. Connaghan, president, Construction Labour Relations Association of B.C.

Highlights of the annual meeting included President Harry Morstead's speech, wherein he outlined the necessity of a strong apprenticeship program to ensure a supply of masons for the future. Executive Director Neil Fraser out- (Continued on page 30)
