TOPS OUT IN 92 WORKING DAYS

The construction industry in Connecticut is marveling at the speed of erection and low cost of a 12-story condominium apartment building which topped out in 92 working days at 1 Campbell Avenue in West Haven, Connecticut. The owner is Properties Corporation of America.
Designed by Architect Peter Kosinski Associates, of New Haven, Edgewater Tower sped skyward with one 13,270 sq. ft. floor of interior and exterior walls, including stairways, balconies, and floor system, completed every 6 1/4 days. Gross-foot cost for these superstructure components was an unbelievably low $6.60, according to Eugene Burian, speaking for Mason Contractor John M. Civitillo, Inc. Total cost for the completed building, without land cost, is budgeted at $3.5 million, according to Properties Corporation of America.
"This feat was not accomplished with a hum-drum design providing simple construction either," according to the International Masonry Institute (IMI), "for Architect Peter Kosinski departed from the square and rectangle too often associated with loadbearing masonry. Instead, he took advantage of the flexibility of masonry and designed a structure that will be noted for its unique architecture for decades to come," says IMI.
The 12-story 172,487 sq. ft. Edgewater Tower has 105 one and two bedroom apartments. It's exterior walls are of split-rib customized concrete masonry. One of the nation's top engineering firms, Gensert Peller Associates of Cleveland, served as Structural Engineers. The Mechanical Engineers were Lawrence G. Spielvogel, Inc., of Hartford.
