Gold Ribbon First Place Winner-Carson, Pirie, Scott & Co. department store, Merrillville, Ind. Architect: A. Epstein & Sons, Inc., Chicago, III. Mason Contractor: Thorleif Larsen & Son, Inc. (MCAA), Itasca, III. Buff/ivory colored glazed brick was selected to complement the various colors and material of the mall building. Distinctive detailing and carefully chosen brick shapes were used to create the masonry design.
ARA National Design Awards
Nine architectural firms from across the nation were design winners in the recent award competition of the Society of American Registered Architects which convened in Atlanta, Ga. According to awards and certificates committee co-chairmen Richard E. Shields and LeRoy C. Everett, 19 design projects were entered in the competition. Shields said that this year's design award competition will be coordinated by John Pankovich of Allentown, Pa., who was one of the judges in the 1976 competition. Other judges included: Bernard Lyon Frishman, Silver Spring, Md.; Professor Peter Lizon of the University of Tennessee, and Barry Milowitz, Scarsdale, N.Y.
Blue Ribbon Second Place Winner-Great Lakes Applied Instruction Building, U.S. Navy, Great Lakes, III. Architect: A. Epstein & Sons, Inc., Chicago, III. Mason Contractor: Ceisel Masonry, Inc. (MCAA), Northbrook, III. The design in masonry matches the two adjacent buildings in material, yet has a distinct character of its own. Extensive use of natural finish, ground face concrete block provides an attractive maintenance free surface. Minimum window openings help to meet the Navy's stringent energy conservation criteria.
Green Ribbon Honorable Mention Winner-Lockwood Center Office Building, Skokie, III. Architect: Brim/Braun Associates, Skokie. Mason Contractor: A. Horn, Inc., Northbrook, III. This handsome building was designed and built as a masonry expression of structure and enclosure. The exterior prominently boasts a highly visual two-story earthern tone colonnade tipped by a projecting masonry third floor.
