A/E Professions Favor Computer Technology

A fourfold increase in the number of architectural and engineering firms using computer-aided graphic design systems is expected by 1986, according to a recent survey of 2,500 architectural and engineering offices conducted by the Sweet's Division of McGraw-Hill Information Systems Co. The survey findings were released by Harry Mileaf, Sweet's manager of product planning and technology. "One third of the top construction design firms expect to be using computer-aided graphic design systems by the middle of the decade, up from just 8 percent today," Mileaf said. Although these specialized computer systems are expensive, the Sweet's expert noted, their cost is more than offset by the substantial increases in productivity achieved with them by professional staffs.

Anti-Theft Guidelines

It's an undisputed fact that the lucrative business of stealing construction machines is growing at an alarming rate.

In an effort to combat the multi-million-dollar annual losses from construction machinery thieves, the Construction Industry Manufacturers Association has produced a booklet entitled Voluntary Guidelines and Suggestions for Manufacturers of Construction, Forestry and Mining Machines to Deter Thefts and Aid in the Recovery of Stolen Machinery.

The objective of the 12-page booklet is to illustrate some basic measures which manufacturers can use to deter the theft of their machines, to aid to the apprehension of thieves, and to facilitate the recovery of stolen machinery and its return to the rightful owner.
