Chicago's Rookery Gets New Luster

Fanciful rooks or crowlike birds, and Moorish-influenced ornamentation (pictured) are now resplendent in the rough, salmon-hued, granite-arched entrance of Chicago's landmark Rookery Building, which was recently extensively cleaned. A crew of 10 worked on the building some 6,400 hours to remove approximately 10,000 lbs. of grime that had accumulated over the past 100 years. More than 60,000 gallons of hot water were used to wash 5,600 gallons of cleaning solution that were applied to the building.

Originally designed by noted architects Burnham and Root, the Rookery stands as a lone survivor of a group of buildings that formed the first LaSalle Street financial district in Chicago's Loop. An extensive interior renovation will begin in 1985 when ownership of the building is transferred to Continental Bank at the expiration of a blind trust.
