Jury's Comment: The bold massing and crisp detailing of the exterior leaves one unprepared for the courtyard interior. This courtyard has a good, urbane urban quality which will be a good focal point on inclement winter days.

Honorable Mention-Toronto Humane Society, Toronto, Ontario.

Architect: Parkin Partnership. Consulting Engineer: Parkin Engineers Ltd. General Contractor: Milne & Nichols Ltd. Mason Contractor: Twin Masonry Ltd. Unit Masonry Producer: Toronto Brick Co., Primeau-Argo Block.

Jury's Comment: This bold statement is very successful in many ways but has several uncomfortable features. The building has a recognizable image in an area of bland mediocrity and is located adjacent to Highway 401, which already has achieved local notoriety. The contemporary interpretation of traditional masonry techniques has been dynamically used. The multi-colored brick and robust modeling of the tower is well-handled. The consistency falls off in the interior and the relationship to an incorporated existing structure is less than satisfactory. The masonry detailing and the craftsmanship are good.

Jury's Comment: The brick masonry on this building is used in a clean, simple and forthright manner. The seeming simplicity of the design is achieved by the careful juxtaposition and proportions of planes of solid walls and the voids that interrupt them. The color of the brick relates well with its neighbors and with the older neighborhood.

Honorable Mention-Armour Heights Community Centre and Branch Library, and Marjory Carton Apartments, North York.

Ontario. Architect: Boignon & Armstrong. Consulting Engineer: A. Tobias Associates Ltd. General Contractor: N. A. Constructions. Mason Contractor: Penine Construction Ltd. Unit Masonry Producer: Domtar Construction Materials, Cooke Concrete.

Architect: Young & Wright. Consulting Engineer: Kazmar Consultants (1976) Ltd. General Contractor: M. A. Butt Construction Ltd. Mason Contractor: Linar Contractors. Unit Masonry Producers: Toronto Brick Co., Canada Building Materials Co.

Jury's Comment: The jury was impressed by the way these dissimilar buildings for different clients had been unified into a homogenous whole, such that the entity was greater than the sum of its parts. The use of brickwork and its consistent detailing contributed greatly to the result.

Jury's Comment: This project has been developed with great respect and care for its relationship to the fabric of the town of Woodbridge. The retention of the existing library facade, and the integration of the exterior details of the existing building into the project has created a new facility which fits admirably into the framework of the the urban setting. Other details from the existing building have been extended to the new structure so that the old and the new relate extremely well, and present a cohesive entity. The new brick, carefully matched to the old, is used judiciously in the interior spaces. The project is an excellent example of the timelessness of brick as a construction material.
