Colored, Fluted Concrete Block
Create an Ever-changing Facade
Richly textured, dark tan concrete block contrast with white stucco, glass and laminated hardwoods to distinguish the new Star of India building from the traditional look of a warehouse in Tempe, Ariz. As sunlight strikes the rough-hewn facade of the combination warehouse-office-showroom, it creates changing patterns of light and shadow that influence the appearance of the building almost hourly.
Stretching 240 ft. along Southern Avenue and 160 ft. deep, the $1 million multipurpose structure, completed in 1981, reflects the image of Star of India-an importer and wholesaler of ladies fashions. The one-story silhouette houses 35,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space and 5,000 sq. ft. of office and showroom area.
Fluted 9 in. 8 in. x 16 in. concrete block was specified by architect Dwayne G. Lewis, AIA, of Phoenix, Ariz. "to add design interest to the long, unbroken wall surfaces, and to create contrasting geometrical forms on the face of the building."
To color the block and mortar, the manufacturer, University Block Co. of Phoenix, used Bayferrox iron oxide pigments made by Mobay Chemical Corp., Pittsburgh, Pa. The fine-particle pigments were evenly dispersed throughout the concrete to produce the through-color required for the split-faced units.
Doyle Masonry Co. of Phoenix was the mason contractor on the project.
