TENNESSEE MASONRY AWARDS

Judges said this building presents "a clear, functionally expressive solution which integrates inside and outside effectively. It relates appropriately to the human scale of its users, while accommodating program requirements for very large volumes. "The differentiation and individual articulation of the classroom, corridor and hangar volumes successfully breaks down the scale into a beautifully balanced and comprehensible composition of discrete parts."
"A clear, straightforward and economical solution, this structure makes the most of the simplest of architectural devices, building massing. It is articulated and defined by dark masonry ribbons, which wrap and define the taut surface," the judges said. "Sometimes we architects are asked to do a lot and are given very little to work with," the judges continued. "And sometimes the results are disastrous.
"In this structure, the architects embraced rather than fought the limited means at their disposal, scale, mass and color, and produced a truly note-worthy building."
Sovran Bank Green Hills Office, Nashville, Tennessee, designed by Thomas, Miller and Partners of Brentwood, Tennessee, and winner of an Excellence in Masonry Merit Honor Award. Jameson & Gibson Construction Company, Memphis, was the general contractor for the 140,000-square-foot building.
Police Training Academy, Memphis, Tennessee, designed by Taylor Gardner Montgomery Architects, Inc., of Memphis, and winner of an Excellence in Masonry Merit Award.
Lee Masonry of Nashville was the mason contractor on the project, while Bennett Construction Company of Brentwood, was the general contractor.
The judges said that this building "gives a feeling of permanence and solidity conveyed in the detailing and massing of the masonry to create a stable, grounded image."
The project, which was a total renovation of the existing branch bank was not closed during the construction process. The bank vault and "rounded" end of the existing structure were preserved and "wrapped in brick" to match the new construction.
Round brick "soldier columns" now flank the entranceway to the bank, and a large recessed brick arch has been added between the two brick chimneys. Beige square brick was used to create a solid "base" appearance.
Judges said that "given the context of the busy commercial strip in which it is located, the exuberance of its form is an appropriate, perhaps even necessary, response."
Pilcher and Son Masonry of Ripley, Tennessee, was the mason contractor. Inman Construction Co., Memphis, was the general contractor.
