(LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY) The Kentuckiana Masonry Institute's Annual Architectural Awards Luncheon was held March 27, 1997 at Spindletop Hall in Lexington, Kentucky. The program was developed to recognize excellence in architectural design. Awards were presented to the architect, structural engineer, mason contractor and owner in each of four categories, the "M" Honor Award for Overall Excellence in Masonry Design, the Merit Award for Best Use of Brick and Clay Products, the Merit Award for Best Use of Concrete Masonry and the Merit Award for Best Use of Masonry in Special Projects.
The "M" Honor Award was presented to Presnell Associates, Inc., Louisville for their design of the Madisonville Health Technology Center in Madisonville, Kentucky. The Structural Engineer was also Presnell Associates. Inc., and the Mason Contractor was Quality Masonry Construction, Inc. The Merit Award for Best Use of Brick and Clay Products for their design of the Bank of Louisville at Crums Lane & Cane Run Road in Shively, Kentucky went to Voelker Winn Architects. Slesser Engineering. Inc. was the Structural Engineer for this project and Parco Construction was the Mason Contractor.
Terry B. Simmons, A.I.A.-Architects, Inc. was awarded the Merit Award for Best Use of Concrete Masonry. The award winning project was the Manufacturing Facility, Bluegrass Woodworking of Kentucky, Inc., Lexingtion, Kentucky. The Structural Engineer was Poage Engineers & Associates and the Mason Contractor was Banahan and Williams.
James B. Evans & Associates were the Landscape Architects who won the Merit Award for Best Use of Masonry in Special Projects for their design of the Phase II Site Development and Patio/Shelter, Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. Buell, Fryer, McReynolds was the Structural Engineer and Huskisson Masonry, Inc. and Ray Tramontin Co. Inc. were the Mason Contractors.
Five architectural students from the University of Kentucky received scholarships for their masonry designs in a student competition held earlier this year. They were Christian Bauer, Randy Brookshire, Hollace Metzger. Sebastian Parks, and Garry Shumaker. First place winners were Christian Bauer and Garry Shumaker. The Kentuckiana Masonry Institute is a trade association for the promotion of masonry in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
ASTM Committee C-15 on manufactured Masonry Units presented the 1996 Alan H. Yorkdale Award to Gregg Borchelt, director of Engineering and Research at the national office of the Brick Institute of America, Reston, VA.

Richard A. Winschel, research group leader, Exploratory Research, for CONSOL Coal Group holds a beaker full of experimental pellets recently produced at CONSOL's R&D facilities at Library, Pa., the nation's largest private coal research laboratory. Looking on is Milton Wu, principal investigator for R&D's pellet project which, if successful, will convert electric power plant scrubber sludge into an economically valuable by-product - aggregate for road building, lightweight concrete blocks, and coal mine stopping walls.
