Mid-Year Construction Equipment Shipments Rise
The Construction Industry Manufacturers Association (CIMA) has just released its construction machinery shipments index for second quarter 1999, which shows mid year gains of 3.5 percent over the previous quarter and a 10.7 percent increase compared to last year's second-quarter totals.

The CIMA international trade group produces the quarterly report based on actual manufacturer unit shipments as reported by the product-specific bureaus of the Association's 500-plus member companies. The CIMA Index uses a 12-month rolling average, based on an index of 100, to give a more consistent picture of the seasonal construction industry.

"Our industry is a cyclical one, and it's encouraging that we have shown steady growth over the past several years, as shown by the CIMA index," noted CIMA President Dennis Slater. "Our members are optimistic that market conditions will remain favorable this year and into 2000. However, we're still watching future actions of our government, such as increases in interest rates, that might affect continued consumer and investor confidence in the U.S. economy."

The second-quarter gains in construction equipment business reflect a consolidation of 39 CIMA product-specific statistical reports, with machinery covered including compaction equipment (nine types); crushers (nine types); cranes (five types); asphalt pavers; cold planers; soil stabilizers; rock drills; screening equipment (three types); horizontal feeders; portable air compressors; mounted breakers; concrete pavers (four types); light towers and generators.
