Sure Cavity and 10mm
Sure Cavity Become ICC-ES-Evaluated

Sure Cavity and 10mm Sure Cavity, manufactured by Masonry Technology Inc. (MTI), received an evaluation report (ESR#2044) from ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES), providing evidence that their Sure Cavity and 10mm Sure Cavity products meet code requirements. Building officials, architects, contractors, specifiers, designers and others utilize the ICC-ES Evaluation Reports to provide a basis for using or approving Sure Cavity and 10mm Sure Cavity in construction projects following the International Building Code.

ICC-ES thoroughly examined MTI product information, test reports, calculations, quality control methods and other factors to ensure the product is code compliant.

ICC-ES is the United States' leading source of technical information on building products and building technology for code compliance. A nonprofit, public-benefit corporation, ICC-ES performs technical evaluations of building products, components, methods and materials. AEM Announces Equipment Manufacturing HOF Inductees

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) announced the latest inductees into the AEM Hall of Fame, which honors the pioneering individuals who have invented, managed, built and led the off-road equipment industry. The 2010 inductees are Jim Gorman of The Gorman-Rupp Co. and Dr. Hans Liebherr of Liebherr Co. The AEM Hall of Fame seeks to create a wider public understanding and appreciation of the industry's role, not only in the past, but also for the future, in global economic and social prosperity. Candidates are judged by an independent panel of industry experts and supporters on how well they exemplify five guiding principles: innovation, industry contributions, leadership, corporate citizenship/social responsibility and sustainability.

NC State/NCMCA Design Competition

The North Carolina State University team of Shaan Hassan of Carrbers, N.C., Jaybe Goethe of Wake Forest, N.C., and Jeremy Leonard of Raleigh, N.C. has claimed the North Carolina Masonry Contractors Association Sigmon Memorial Scholarship Masonry Design Award for 2010 and will share a semester's in-state tuition as their prize. NCMCA Past-president Doug Burton and Brandy Britt Thompson, an architect with the firm of Clearscapes in Raleigh, served as jurors for the October competition. The team was required to design and model a hypothetical masonry office building. The competition is part of Professor Patrick Rand's "Architectural Construction Systems" class at North Carolina State University's College of Design. The scholarship is named in memory of David, Randy and Dwayne Signon. The year 2010 marks the 10th year for the NC State/NCMCA design competition.

Simpson Strong-Tie Lab Opens at Cal Poly

Simpson Strong-Tie and Cal Poly University celebrated the grand opening of the Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Lab in October. As part of the university's College of Architecture and Environmental Design, the facility provides a hands-on learning environment for students. Following Cal Poly's motto of "Learn by Doing," the 7,000-square-foot Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Lab is designed so students can build and test full-scale models and building components.

The lab is built with a variety of materials, including heavy timber braced framing, engineered wood, cast-in-place concrete walls, translucent polycarbonate wall panels and several Simpson Strong-Tie products.

NMHG Adds 401 Lift Truck Manufacturing Facilities

NACCO Materials Handling Group Inc. (NMHG), the makers of Yale and Hyster lift trucks, has added 401 workers for the company's Sulligent, Ala, Berea, Ky, Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, and Greenville, N.C., lift truck manufacturing facilities. In addition to adding 401 workers, NMHG is adding third shifts to certain areas, and assembly plants in Berea and Greenville are starting up second shifts in painting and select assembly lines to meet expected ongoing demand and to reduce lead times.
